The harmonious combination of shapes, structures, and contrasting colors is the hallmark of works by Prang Vipaluck Siriplanan, the designer behind the cover of A Day magazine’s Creative Entrepreneur edition a design that had readers clamoring to know more about the artist behind it.

It wouldn’t be surprising if you’re unfamiliar with her work, as Prang only transitioned into the world of illustration a little over a year ago. However, her passion for art goes back much further.

Prang shares that she has been captivated by art since childhood—not only drawing but also photography and crafting. So when it came time to choose a field of study for university, it was no surprise that her top choice was a design-related major. She hoped to combine all her creative interests under one roof. Yet, her university experience at the Faculty of Communication Design at Chulalongkorn University exceeded her expectations.

“Before university, my portfolio was filled with sketches on paper and various craft projects since I knew very little about graphic design software. But my studies introduced me to new tools and techniques—everything from woodworking workshops to video editing, as well as essential graphic design software,” she explained.

“The transition from hand-drawing to digital work opened up new possibilities. First, I could revise my work endlessly. Second, if I could find a way to use the tools that suited me, it would be even better. I especially enjoyed organizing layers in the software, as it helped me visualize the dimensions of the artwork more clearly.”

ไม่แปลกที่คุณอาจจะยังไม่เคยผ่านตาผลงานของศิลปินคนนี้มากนัก เพราะเธอเพิ่งผันตัวเข้าสู่แวดวงนักวาดภาพประกอบได้เพียงหนึ่งปีเศษๆ เท่านั้นเอง

ปรางค์เล่าว่าเธอคือคนหนึ่งที่หลงใหลในงานศิลปะตั้งแต่เด็ก ไม่เพียงแค่การวาดรูป แต่ยังรวมไปถึงการถ่ายภาพและงานคราฟต์ เมื่อถึงเวลาต้องตัดสินใจเรียนต่อในระดับมหาวิทยาลัย ตัวเลือกอันดับต้นๆ จึงหนีไม่พ้นคณะด้านการออกแบบ ที่ที่เธอคาดหวังว่าจะได้ประยุกต์ความชอบทั้งหมดเข้าด้วยกัน แต่ในความเป็นจริง สิ่งที่ปรางค์ได้จากรั้วมหาวิทยาลัยกลับมีมากกว่าที่คิด

“ย้อนกลับไปก่อนเข้ามหาลัย พอร์ตโฟลิโอของเรามีแต่ภาพวาดบนกระดาษและงานคราฟต์ต่างๆ เพราะเราแทบไม่มีความรู้เกี่ยวกับโปรแกรมกราฟิกเลย แต่การเรียนในคณะ Communication Design จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ก็ทำให้เราได้รู้จักเครื่องมือใหม่ๆ ในการผลิตชิ้นงานมากขึ้น อย่างเวิร์กช็อปงานไม้ การตัดต่อวิดีโอ รวมถึงโปรแกรมกราฟิกต่างๆ ที่จำเป็นในสายงานออกแบบ

“การเปลี่ยนจากงานวาดมือมาทำงานในคอมฯ สร้างความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ หลายอย่าง หนึ่ง คือเราแก้ไขได้ตลอดเวลา สอง คือถ้าเราสามารถหาวิธีใช้ที่เข้ากับเราได้มันก็จะยิ่งดี ส่วนตัวเราสนุกกับการจัดระบบเลเยอร์ในโปรแกรม เพราะมันช่วยให้เราเห็นมิติของภาพมากขึ้น”
